Mumbai Pune Helicopter Services

Mumbai Pune Helicopter Services

Helicopter services between Mumbai and Pune are emerging as a fast, reliable alternative to road and rail travel, especially for time-sensitive commuters and corporate travellers. With frequent traffic congestion on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and unpredictable travel times, on-demand helicopter flights offer a convenient way to cover the distance in under an hour.

Demand for Chartered Helicopter Services Between Pune and Mumbai Gains Momentum

Chartered helicopter services operating between Pune and Mumbai are witnessing a steady rise in demand, fuelled by worsening road congestion, increased corporate travel and recent disruptions in scheduled airline operations, particularly those affecting IndiGo flights. Aviation industry operators say that while the segment remains niche, it has seen consistent expansion over the past few years.

Currently, an estimated 10 to 15 charter helicopters are available for commercial operations on the Pune–Mumbai sector. Unlike scheduled airlines, these services function entirely on an on-demand charter model, allowing clients to select departure times based on convenience and urgency. Each flight requires prior clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with operators estimating that the corridor sees over 60 helicopter movements every month. Typically, aircraft operate five to six days a week, depending on demand and weather conditions.

Cost for Mumbai Pune Charter Heli Flights

According to industry estimates, a round trip on a single-engine helicopter between Pune and Mumbai costs approximately Rs 4.5 lakh plus GST and can accommodate four to five passengers. Twin-engine helicopters, which offer higher redundancy and range, can cost upwards of Rs 8 lakh plus GST per round trip, subject to aircraft availability and operational parameters. Some operators also offer discounted “empty-leg” flights—where helicopters reposition without passengers—with prices starting at around Rs 25,000.

Vishwaraj Chakote, founder of Vishwaraj Aviation, said helicopter charters on this route typically operate around three round trips per week and are largely driven by time-sensitive requirements. “Clients opt for helicopter travel primarily to avoid road congestion and ensure they reach meetings or events on time. While it is a premium service, for people who place a high value on time, cost becomes a secondary consideration,” he said.

Despite such spikes in visibility, operators caution that airline disruptions act more as short-term catalysts rather than long-term demand drivers. Helicopter charters are primarily used by politicians, business leaders and celebrities seeking reliable, time-efficient travel. Commonly deployed single-engine helicopters on this route include the Airbus H125 and H130, AW119, Bell 407 and Bell 206 L4, while twin-engine options include the Airbus H135, H145 and H160, Bell 429 and Bell 412.

Expanding Network Beyond Mumbai–Pune

In Pune, helicopter operations are conducted from helipads at Koregaon Park Annexe and Viman Nagar, while Mumbai departures and arrivals are primarily handled at Juhu Airport and the Mahalaxmi Racecourse helipad. Beyond the Mumbai–Pune corridor, helicopters are frequently chartered for destinations such as Shirdi, Nashik, Lonavala, Aamby Valley and Mahabaleshwar. Flight time between Pune and Mumbai generally ranges from 45 minutes to one hour, depending on air traffic and weather conditions.

Mumbai-based Flyyo India, founded by Akash Nale, entered the Pune–Mumbai helicopter charter market in November with an on-demand service operating a single-engine Airbus H125. The company advertises travel times of 30 to 35 minutes between the two cities.

Latest Update on New Route

Pune–Mumbai Helicopter Route Modified Due to New Airspace Regulations

The flight route for helicopter services between Pune and Mumbai has been revised following the introduction of new flying zones around the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Earlier, helicopters flying from Pune would take a near-straight path and pass through NMIA airspace before landing at Juhu Airport in Mumbai, completing the journey in about 45 minutes.

Helicopter operations on this sector follow Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which require pilots to navigate visually while maintaining safe separation from major airports, air traffic and obstacles. With the commencement of operations at NMIA, helicopters are no longer permitted to transit directly through its airspace. The restriction has been implemented to ensure adequate separation between rotary-wing aircraft and fixed-wing commercial flights operating from the new airport.

New Route Alignment

From December 22, 2025, helicopter flights between Pune and Mumbai have been rerouted to skirt the NMIA airspace. The revised routes largely follow coastal and urban corridors, with key navigation points including the Sanpada Railway Shed, Mankhurd Railway Station and Shivaji Park.

These changes have been designed in accordance with guidelines issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and are aimed at enhancing overall operational safety in the Mumbai airspace.

Flight Duration

Single-engine helicopters such as the Airbus H125 typically cover the approximately 150-km distance between Pune and Mumbai in 30 to 45 minutes. While the journey remains significantly faster than road travel, passengers may experience a marginal increase in flight time compared to earlier routes due to the detours around NMIA airspace.

Helipad Infrastructure

In Mumbai, helicopter arrivals and departures are handled at helipads located at Juhu Airport, the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and Jawahar. In Pune, helicopters operate from Pune Airport as well as private helipads such as YOO Villas in Kharadi.

Impact of the Route Change

Operators note that the revised routing has resulted in a slight increase in travel time, with most flights now taking between 35 and 45 minutes. Despite this, helicopter services continue to offer a time-efficient alternative for commuters and business travellers navigating the heavily congested Mumbai–Pune corridor.
