Helicopter Service Set to Transform Winter Tourism in Kinnaur Himachal
Kinnaur is entering a new phase of tourism and connectivity with the successful trial run of a heli-taxi service at Reckong Peo on Monday. The initiative is expected to significantly improve access to the high-altitude district, especially during the harsh winter months when road connectivity is often unreliable.
For years, Kinnaur’s challenging terrain, extreme weather and limited transport options kept it largely cut off, with the journey from Shimla taking up to eight hours by road. The new helicopter service reduces this travel time to just 30–40 minutes, offering a faster and more dependable alternative.
The development comes as snowfall becomes increasingly scarce in Shimla and other lower regions, positioning Kinnaur—with its snow-covered landscapes and rugged valleys—as a strong contender for Himachal Pradesh’s next winter tourism destination. Popular locations such as Sangla, Kalpa, Chitkul, Nako and Ropa Valley, which often remain inaccessible in winter, could now see year-round tourist activity.
Local stakeholders believe the service will provide a major boost to homestays, hotels, adventure tourism and local crafts, while officials are also exploring regular operations under the Tribal Sub-Plan and linking the service with emergency and heli-ambulance facilities.
With the successful trial completed, the helicopter service is being seen as a game-changer that could finally unlock Kinnaur’s long-awaited winter tourism potential, bringing economic opportunities and improved connectivity to the remote district.
